GRIEF SPEAKS ONLINE WORKSHOP

Are you longing for a place of comfort when you're feeling overwhelmed with sadness? Do you find yourself going through the journey of grief alone, even when you're surrounded by others who are also hurting? Does your heart feel heavy because someone you love is not here, and your thoughts are clouded, making you feel disconnected? Maybe you try to hide your grief by staying busy, unknowingly pushing it to the back of your mind.

Grief can be an incredibly intricate and multifaceted process for many individuals. It may stem from a variety of circumstances, such as a prolonged illness taking its toll, the heartbreaking descent into dementia, the jolt of sudden and unexpected loss, or even the strain of navigating a challenging relationship. In the wake of such experiences, individuals often find themselves grappling with an intricate mix of emotions – shame, guilt, anger, and even relief, alongside the overwhelming sense of loss. Each of these sentiments is undeniably significant and deserving of recognition.

By embracing the power of creative expression, we open ourselves up to the possibility of releasing pent-up tension and embracing grief, allowing us to carry its weight more comfortably. In doing so, we enhance our ability to cope, laying the groundwork for the gradual process of recovery and healing.

Through the release of tears, through sharing our pain with others, or through the cathartic outlet of creative expression, we slowly build a sense of safety within grief. It is during these moments that we come to realize that grief is not separate from love; rather, it is an integral part of it. Through this understanding, we gradually find our way back to a state of inner equilibrium and peace, carrying the lessons and memories of our loved ones with us.

My story

When my beautiful Mum died, I wanted to experience grief differently from the overwhelming despair I had felt when my Dad passed away eight years earlier. Miraculously, I found myself navigating Mum's passing with a gentler touch, even though it was still incredibly painful and filled with sadness. In the midst of sorrow, I managed to uncover a hidden sweetness, as if the rawness of my emotions became an honour to live with. Processing my grief at the raw edge allowed me to connect deeply with my own humanity, enriching my life through the precious and delicate exploration of sorrow. Recognizing the societal taboo around grief, I felt compelled to express my pain and share my thoughts about Mum, for I believe that talking openly about grief can bring healing, even in a world where it is usually whispered about in hushed corners.

About five weeks after my mother's funeral, I attended a grief workshop in Ireland. Alongside others dealing with loss, we shared our sadness and sang together to lighten our burdens. This experience helped me face my pain and gave me tools to navigate life's challenges. Through creativity, I found comfort in merging my love and loss. Exploring grief revealed a strength within me that allowed me to endure and reclaim my life with purpose and energy.

Experiencing loss through the lens of love rather than despair is the premise of this heartfelt and transformative workshop. Through various therapeutic writing techniques and compassionate support, individuals are encouraged to embrace their pain and honour their loved ones with a renewed sense of hope. This unique approach fosters resilience and empowers participants to find solace and meaning in their grief, ultimately leading to a path of healing and restoration.

What will be expected of me?

During the workshop, we explore grief through poetry and prose. We delve into personal loss using prompts to unlock our hidden expressions. You don’t have to be a writer, many of the simplest poems are significant in their own right. Writing is a powerful ritual, allowing you to express grief through a little structure. This helps you honour loved ones and understand how loss impacts your own life. Through this process, you'll find comfort and as I did a little peace in grief.

Grief has no time limit. It doesn't matter if you lost someone recently or a long time ago. The workshop offers a safe and supportive space for you to connect with the person who has died. Through quiet reflection, you can explore your own joueney of grief. You can express and deal with your emotions at your own speed and in your own style. This can help you find comfort while coping with the pain of loss.

LOSS

Loss brings us to our knees, so that we no longer have to stand,

So that we can weep our grief - every last drop of it,

And when we feel empty as though we have nothing left,

Loss becomes light

It re-fills us with love,

So that we can stand again and courageously face the day.
